Many of you who know me over the last year may remember how when I wasn't teaching or preparing to go to China, I was working on the "Sanskrit Book." Along with authors and Triveni Yoga's co-creators Jessica Kung-Drefus and Stéphane Dreyfus, I feverishly designed, illustrated and edited this book, all the while vastly improving my own understanding of Sanskrit.
Well, "Basic Sanskrit for Yogis" is finally published and it's a real beauty! This book is an introduction to the endlessly fascinating and complex ancient Yoga language. Any yoga teacher or serious student will gain depth in knowing even just some Sanskrit preliminaries. Sanskrit is the root language of many English words, and learning each root and branch of a sanskrit word adds depth to my walk on the path and traces ancient wisdom into a modern context. As a teacher, I use Sanskrit to call out poses, and even build themes around a single word. I can feel the impact of the vibrations of the language in my subtle body-saying it and hearing it gives a completeness to the asanas.
The workbook introduces the history of Sanskrit and Devenagari, gives the meanings of many words and mantras, provides illustrative learning exercises. It also teaches you the alphabet and how to read and write the names of many poses! It's a fun addition to your yoga toolkit as a teacher or a student!
